I am an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a faculty affiliate of the Center for Effective Lawmaking.
I study how policy entrepreneurs and political institutions interact, with emphases on how interest groups influence Congress’s legislative agenda and how legislators’ backgrounds, interactions, and resources encourage them to more or less effectively advance their legislation. My research has been published in the American Political Science Review, the Journal of Politics, Interest Groups & Advocacy, and other outlets, and has been supported by organizations including New America, the Dirksen Congressional Center, and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. I teach courses on Congress, persuasion & advocacy, political organization, and research methods. I also regularly appear in local, state, and national media and consult with officeholders and advocacy groups on matters of legislative and coalitional strategy.
